Leipzig: Im Insel-Verlag, 1923. First edition of Rilke's Duino Elegies, arguably the greatest work of lyric poetry of the Twentieth Century. One of only three or five (bibliographical references vary slightly) copies printed on Japanese paper by Tiemann-Antiqua von Gebr. Klingspor in Offenbach a. M., out of a total edition of 300 copies; as the colophon page records, this copy was printed for Ernst Engel, the printer of the edition at the Klingspor Press. Huenich p. 92. Ritzer E9. The colophon reads: "Diese erste Ausgabe der 'Duineser Elegien' wurde aus der Tiemann-Antiqua von Gebr. Klingspor in Offenbach a. M, in dreihundert Exemplaren gedruckt. Dieses Exemplar wurde uber die Auflage gedruck fur Ernst Engel". The bibliographers differ as to the exact number of copies printed on Japan; Ritzer gives the figure as three, Sarkowski (Bibliographie des Insel-Verlags) as five. In either case, this issue of Rilke's most famous work is of the greatest rarity. Published when Rilke was eighteen, Leben und Lieder was "blatantly sentimental, at once simplistic and unmannered, but it nonetheless developed some of the major issues that moved him. Many of its poems were, of course, manufactured to serve his career, but others were deeply felt. Amateurish as they were, they expose a young poet's nerves as he tried to recreate the old conflicts between his parents or to reflect his desire for an image of himself as an artist conscious of his place in his time. Yet they were appallingly sentimental, immature, considering (Rilke's) aim to achieve instant recognition and approval." "Rilke rejected these poems before they were published.... Von Mises 25. Presentation copy, inscribed by Rilke on the half-title page to “Maximilian Harden, herzlich, dankbar und voll Ergebenheit, Rainer Maria Rilke. Paris, märz 1903.” According to the historian A. J. P. Taylor, “Harden was certainly the most brilliant political writer during the reign of Wilhelm II.” But he was also erratic, inconsistent and, in Taylor’s words, “essentially critical and destructive.” Rilke’s fond inscription, which translates as “warm, grateful and full of devotion” presumably dates from the period when Harden was a theatre critic. In the upper left corner of the front inside cover there is pasted a small piece of paper, presumably obscuring something that was already there; and, at the bottom of the rear inside cover there is an ink-stamp from the Museum Tel Aviv, with the number 2504 written on it.
