HOUSMAN, A. E.
Last Poems.
London: Grant Richards Ltd. 1922. First edition. One of 4000 copies printed. Carter, Sparrow & White 5. Housman was fastidious about punctuation & was annoyed by the omission of punctuation marks in the first two lines of the poem on p. 52. However, when the publisher offered to insert an errata slip in the remaining copies, Housman replied: No, don't put in an errata slip. The blunder will probably enhance the value of the 1st edition in the eyes of bibliophiles, an idiotic class. Last Poems could be considered Housman's volume of war poems, containing as it does his bitter Epitaph On An Army Of Mercenaries: These, in the day when heaven was falling, / The hour when earth's foundations fled, / Followed their mercenary calling / And took their wages and are dead. / Their shoulders held the sky suspended; / They stood, and earth's foundations stay; / What God abandoned, these defended, / And saved the sum of things for pay.. Small 8vo, original cloth, dust jacket. An inch-long closed tear at the top of the front panel, another short closed tear at the top of the back panel, and some slight wear at the base of the spine, otherwise a fine, bright copy. Uncommon thus. .
