First edition of Gumuchian's Catalogue 13, the greatest of rare bookseller's catalogues in the field of children's literature and long a standard reference. "This catalogue represents an attempt, the first of its kind, to present to booklovers a collection of early juvenile literature." - From the Introduction. The collection, spanning the 15th - 19th centuries, is by no means limited to French books. Limited to 1000 copies printed, this being one of 900 unnumbered copies on "papier velin". Vol. I consists of 6,251 annotated entries. Volume II contains 336 plates of numbered facsimiles of title pages, bindings, illustrations, and full pages with text. Each volume has a preface, in French, by Paul Gavault; Volume I has an introduction, in English and French, by the editors and a bibliography of works consulted; Volume II has an "Index des Planches" with the English, French, or German captions for the plates. 2 volumes, folio, illustrated with color-plates, dark blue half-morocco & marbled boards with original pictorial printed wrappers bound in, t.e.g., matching morocco-tipped marbled slipcases, by Devauchelle. A beautiful copy, bound by one of the masters of modern French book-binding, in superb condition.
